Henry Guyer Civil War letters to Anna and Jacob Guyer, 1860-1865.

Sixty-nine letters, some accompanied by envelopes, written by Guyer to his sister and brother in Newark, New Jersey. Four ALS, dated 1860, were written from Haydenville, Massachusetts, and concern his work and social life in Haydenville. Sixty-two ALS, and three ALS fragments, [1861]-1865 and undated, were written during his service in the Civil War. These letters contain detailed description of army life and his experiences during campaigns and battles, including encampment of the Army of the Potomac at Washington, D.C., 1861-1862; the Peninsular Campaign; the Battle of Antietam; encampment and guarding of railroads near Nashville, Tennessee, 1863-1864; the Battle of Resaca; Sherman's March to the Sea; the siege and occupation of Atlanta; and Sherman's campaign in the Carolinas. A few letters describe his regiment's subsequent march to Virginia and plans for return to New Jersey. The letters also discuss Guyer's views on the Army and the War, impressions of the South, and family news. Also present are an ALS from Guyer to [W. L.?] Bishop, Newark, [1862?]; an ALS to Guyer from Theodore C. Van Arsdale, 1864, regarding Van Arsdale's court martial conviction; a military pass issued to Guyer, printed form completed in manuscript, 1862; and "A Journey Under Difficulties," holograph, an account written by Guyer of a return journey made by him to an encampment near Maupin Station, Tennessee, 1864. Many of the letters are accompanied by manuscript transcriptions made by a former owner; also present is a listing of items, also prepared by a former owner.

Henry Guyer was born ca. 1840. In 1860 he left Newark, New Jersey, to work as a metal craftsman in Haydenville, Massachusetts. At the start of the Civil War, he enlisted as a private in the 10th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteers, which served as part of the Army of the Potomac, 1861-1862.
